Hi everyone! I’m Megan, and I’ve been thinking about starting a blog or at least a diary of my life and my own mental health journey. Having a lot of followers would be great! But, if not, then, this is for my own journaling purposes.
Here is a bit about myself. I’m a nurse and a mental health advocate. I love to spend time with my family and friends. I also love to sing in my church choir, play my instrument, travel, and shop. Oh and I have OCD and likely Generalized Anxiety.
I write it like this, because I want people to know that we are ourselves first. We are not our mental illnesses. They’re just part of us, but not the whole story. The world needs to know that we are more than just our challenges. Unfortunately, I see it all the time where people with mental health issues are seen as their illness first. We need to change that language. For example, say, “This is Sue. She’s my best friend. She’s a great cook. She is a journalist. And, she has ocd.” I might work in OCD later in the conversation, or as I get to know the person, but you get the idea. Person first language is what is best.
Anyway, that’s all I have for now. Just some food for thought until I write more next time. Have a great day!
